Review: USA v England, Serbia v Ghana, Algeria v Slovenia, Germany v Australia

USA v England, Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg
England got off to a flying start with Heskey slipping in Gerrard to go up 1.0 in the 4th minute. England continued to create chances but couldn't finish. In the 4oth, Dempsey turned from 30 yards and had a go. The shot was right at Robert Green but somehow, it slipped right through his hands and USA were level. Altidore came close in the 2nd half, but Green tipped the ball onto the post. The rest of the match played out with few chances. Final score: USA 1.1 England

Serbia v Ghana, Loftus Versfeld Studium, Pretoria
Serbia came into the match as favorites, but Ghana looked just as good in the opening minutes. Neither side had any great chances, but some close efforts that may have had a keeper worried. Both sides looked good defensively, with Nemanja Vidic in back for Serbia. Half time: Serbia 0.0 Ghana. 2nd half played out very similar early. Lukovic was sent off in the 74th minute from a 2nd yellow card. Then a whipped in ball on the left from Ghana in the 83rd minute resulted in a Serbian handball. Asamoah Gyan would step up to take the penalty. The keeper went right, Gyan went left, and Ghana were ahead. Serbia never created another chance, so it was the first ever victory for an African side in a World Cup on African soil. Serbia 0.1 Ghana

Algeria v Slovenia, Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane
This was maybe the most boring match of the World Cup so far, with neither side doing much. Scoreless first half. In the 59th minute, Ghezzal was brought on and instantly got a yellow. In the 73rd, he saw yellow again and Algeria were reduced to 10 men. In the 79th, Koren had a shot and we saw something much like Robert Green versus USA, and Slovenia were ahead. No chances after that. Algeria 0.1 Slovenia

Group C
Slovenia is top of Group C, after 3 pts v Algeria. USA and England are tied in 2nd, with a point each. Algeria is at the bottom with 0 pts and a -1 goal difference.

Germany v Australia, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban
Australia started strong, and gave the Germans a scare early on. However, Lukas Podolski scored shortly after on a strike from inside the penalty area. In the 26th, Mark Schwarzer came out to collect a cross, but was beaten to the ball by Miroslav Klose on a header that put Germany 2.0 up at halftime. Tim Cahill received a red, for a late challenge, however the call was very harsh. Mueller was streaking forward in the 67th, and found the back of the net, in off the post. 3 minutes later, substitute Cacau, put a 4th past Schwarzer. Australia was in shambles, as the match finished: Germany 4.0 Australia

Group D
Germany is top of the table after a 4.0 win. Ghana also has 3 pts but a has less of a goal difference. Serbia are 3rd with no points, and Australia are 4th with 0 pts, and have plenty of work to advance.
